    A Note on Shortest Developments

    De Vrijer has presented a proof of the finite developments theorem which, in addition to showing that all developments are finite, gives an effective reduction strategy computing longest developments as well as a simple formula computing their length. We show that by applying a rather simple and intuitive principle of duality to de Vrijer's approach one arrives at a proof that some developments are finite which in addition yields an effective reduction strategy computing shortest developments as well as a simple formula computing their length. The duality fails for general beta-reduction. Our results simplify previous work by Khasidashvili

    De siste Ärene har det vÊrt satt fokus pÄ produktivitet i byggeprosjekter. Det ble i fÞlge statistisk sentralbyrÄ omsatt for i underkant av 275 milliarder kroner i bygge- og anleggsbransjen i 2009. Forbedringspotensialet er altsÄ stort dersom man kan finne metoder for Ä effektivisere produksjonen. Et tiltak har vÊrt Ä trekke erfaringer fra bilindustriens lean thinking og lean production. Lean construction er byggebransjens tilnÊrming til denne tenkningen. Et sentralt fokus for lean-tankegangen er Ä skape flyt i produksjonen. Uttrykket flyt er flittig benyttet til tross for at det ennÄ ikke er klart definert eller konseptualisert. Man kan enkelt forestille seg at det er en kobling mellom flyt i produksjonen og produktivitet. Denne koblingen er imidlertid ikke enkel Ä pÄvise eller mÄle. Man savner en metode for mÄling av flyt. Dette gjelder bÄde for operasjoner og hele prosesser. For Ä kunne mÄle flyt er man avhengige av Ä ha en entydig oppfatning av hva flyt er. Da flyt forelÞpig er en metafor uten klare rammer og begrensninger, har vi fÞrst gÄtt gjennom store mengder litteratur bÄde fra byggrelatert forskning, men ogsÄ teori som omhandler vareproduserende industri, for Ä se hvorvidt det er mulig Ä presisere uttrykket flyt. Oppgaven er i hovedsak basert pÄ gjennomgang av publisert litteratur som kan relateres til flyt i byggeprosjekter. Hensikten med dette er Ä undersÞke om det lar seg gjÞre Ä definere og konseptualisere flytbegrepet. Som utgangspunkt for litteratursÞket er det utfÞrt sÞk i ulike akademisk anerkjente databaser av tidsskrifter, bÞker, protokoller og andre publikasjoner. Litteratur som er referert fra og benyttet som kilde i de mest relevante funnene er fremskaffet og gjennomgÄtt i hÄp om Ä finne informasjon av interesse for oppgavens tema. I oppgaven er det ogsÄ lagt vekt pÄ intervjuer, workshops og mÄlinger pÄ byggeplass. Intervjuene er utfÞrt ustrukturert og kvalitativt. Det er ogsÄ utfÞrt tilfeldige spÞrringer og samtaler blant hÄndverkere i forbindelse med tidsmÄlinger pÄ byggeplass.     AbstractIn recent years increasing consensus has emerged that program transformers, e.g. partial evaluation and unfold/fold transformations, should terminate; a compiler should stop even if it performs fancy optimizations! A number of techniques to ensure termination of program transformers have been invented, but their correctness proofs are sometimes long and involved. We present a framework for proving termination of program transformers, cast in the metric space of trees. We first introduce the notion of an abstract program transformer; a number of well-known program transformers can be viewed as instances of this notion. We then formalize what it means that an abstract program transformer terminates and give a general sufficient condition for an abstract program transformer to terminate. We also consider some specific techniques for satisfying the condition. As applications we show that termination of some well-known program transformers either follows directly from the specific techniques or is easy to establish using the general condition. Our framework facilitates simple termination proofs for program transformers. Also, since our framework is independent of the language being transformed, a single correctness proof can be given in our framework for program transformers that use essentially the same technique in the context of different languages. Moreover, it is easy to extend termination proofs for program transformers to accommodate changes to these transformers. Finally, the framework may prove useful for designing new termination techniques for program transformers

    The growth of the private equity industry has spurred concerns about its potential impact on the economy more generally. This analysis looks across nations and industries to assess the impact of private equity on industry performance. Industries where PE funds have invested in the past five years have grown more quickly in terms of productivity and employment. There are few significant differences between industries with limited and high private equity activity. It is hard to find support for claims that economic activity in industries with private equity backing is more exposed to aggregate shocks. The results using lagged private equity investments suggest that the results are not driven by reverse causality. These patterns are not driven solely by common law nations such as the United Kingdom and United States, but also hold in Continental Europe.
